Questions Frequently asked by International Students and Families

We require one standardized test score of English language proficiency, either a TOEFL-like test score, or the SSAT verbal score. We strongly recommend taking both tests. The TOEFL is a better indicator of English language ability, since the SSAT is not designed for non-native English speakers. But the SSAT provides a good measure of math ability.

We do not accept students at midyear. Our admissions application deadline is January 31st to begin study the following September. We do not accept 12th grade students. Most new students enroll for 9th and 10th grade, with a few coming as 11th graders. Repeating a grade is acceptable and sometimes advisable to improve English language skills, provided that the student will not reach age 20 by graduation.

For younger students, applying for 9th and sometimes 10th grade, the minimum TOEFL score is 500. For students applying for 10th and 11th grades, a TOEFL score of at least 550 is preferred. Due to competition for Korean student places, a 550 minimum TOEFL score is expected for Korean applicants. For the SSAT math score, a score of around 70% or higher is desired. For the verbal SSAT score, 50% or higher is best, but the SSAT verbal score is not always a good measure for International Students, and if the TOEFL score is acceptable, then we will weigh it more strongly than the verbal SSAT score.

Yes. We have around 50 International Students each year to whom we issued I-20 Forms after they enrolled as new students in April and then provided us with financial certification and a copy of their passport page. In nearly all cases, newly admitted Tabor International Students succeed in obtaining student visas

To some extent. Our experience has been that students and their families do not want a large “block” of students from a single country that might draw them away from the community. In general our largest country groups average around ten students, which we take as a guideline rather than a strict rule. We are fortunate to have many talented Korean applicants, so this is the group, currently at fourteen, whose admission is most likely to be affected by a general limit on the number of students from any one country or non-English language area.

Occasionally financial aid is awarded to International Students. In line with the school’s student body composition, most financial aid is awarded to American students, and the amount available for International Students is limited.
