The start of the 2008 season was the most difficult in history. Sixty-four students showed up for try-outs, easily the largest group of sailors assembled in Marion in the school’s history. With cuts from the program inevitable for the first time since the fleet expanded from 12-boats, the coaching staff (Rob Hurd, Cindy Muther, Marykate Moniz, Eric Hartell, Chris White, Carolyn Warner and Dave Bill) went about evaluating talent, both old and new, in order to create a varsity and JV squad that was built for success this year and for the long haul too.
The schedule was brutal, with three varsity meets each Wednesday and Saturday. The squad accepted the challenge well, amassing a 28-4 record – our only losses were to rival St George’s. The JV Seawolves were even more successful, going 18-1 in dual meet action. At the New England team racing championship, the Seawolves rolled to a 6-1 record in the qualifying round and squeezed through the double championship round at 3 and 3. The result was a three-way unbreakable tie at 9-4 with St George’s and Milton Academy. For the first time ever, the NESSA championship came down to a sail-off. Tabor beat Milton, but lost to St George’s to finish second and earn another trip the to the ISSA Team Racing Nationals (Baker Trophy), held in Minnesota this year.
In Minnesota, the Seawolves worked their way into the gold fleet on the basis of a 9-2 record in the qualifying round. They finished 3-3 against St George’s, Pt. Loma HS (CA), and Newport Harbor HS (CA) in gold round action, which was good enough for second place – the fifth time that the Seawolves have finished second at the Baker.
