Graduation Requirements

It is to be stressed that the distribution requirements listed below are minimal. In general, it is the work done beyond these requirements that qualifies a student for acceptance to selective colleges. The basic requirements will normally include:

  • 4 credits of English, including both semesters of senior English
  • 1 Credit each in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry
  • 2 credits in laboratory sciences, including 1 in Biology
  • 2 credits in foreign languages (classical or modern)
  • 2 credits in history or social sciences, including 1 in U.S. History
  • 8 arts units over four years
  • 0.5 credits each for completion of Strategies for Success and Human Development

NOTE:  Beginning with the class of 2012 the foreign languange graduation requirement will change to 3 credits in one foreign language or 2 credits each in two different languages.

Academic Schedule

Tabor's academic year is divided into two semesters; each semester is further subdivided into two quarters. Midyear and final exams are administered in January and June respectively. Major courses meet four teaching periods each week (two fifty minute blocks and two forty minute blocks). Minor courses meet less frequently and/or demand less outside preparation than majors. The typical course load for students is five major and one (or two) minor subjects. It is not unusual, however, for upper-class students to carry six majors and one or two minors. The vast majority of Tabor students will undertake one or more Advanced Placement courses at some point during their career.

Fulfilling Tabor’s Arts Requirement

Tabor’s graduation requirement in the fine and performing arts is fulfilled by accumulating "Arts Units."  Arts Units are earned either by participating in an arts-related co-curricular offering or by electing art / music courses as part of one’s academic program of study. Students are advised to earn a minimum of two Arts Units per year, with the total number of Units necessary for graduation defined as follows:

Grade Entering             Arts Units Required
Freshman                              (8)
Sophomore                            (6)
Junior                                      (4)
Senior                                     (2)

Students (with the help of advisors) can devise a program that best suits their needs according to their interests, selecting from the wide range of offerings as described below:
