Tabor Volunteers in Action

Peter A. Cook, Jr. '86 started The Jordyn Cook Epilepsy Fund, Inc. to help create awareness about childhood epilepsy. The fund is named after his daughter who was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was three years old. They have partnered with Mass General Hospital and WGHB to fund a web-site about epilepsy awareness. The site can be accessed through http://www.jordyncookepilepsyfund.org/ or www.massgeneral.org/childhoodepilepsy.  Read about efforts in The Patriot Ledger.

Tom Sartini '86 is raising money for Juvenile Diabetes.  His family is participating in the Walk to Cure Diabetes on September 29 in Boston. Their team is called Jack's Angels, in honor of their son, Jack who was recently diagnosed with this disease. For those who cannot join them in the walk but would like to donate, click here. If you can walk, join the team.  Team captain is Allison Walsh-Sartini. All walkers will receive a team t-shirt.

Kiyomi Monro '87 Raises money for the National MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society through the MS Bike Tour. To help the cause, contact Kiyomi to sponsor, or even join a ride.

Sarah Penfield '89 is currently raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through its Team in Training Program. Visit her Team in Training website.

Josh Piekarski '99 Would be happy to share information with anyone interested in AmeriCorps.

Harold Chen '01 has created a Dream Project. Harold, along with some other friends at Duke University, created a non-profit organization to bring sustainable development practices and technology to rural China. They have summer volunteer opportunities all over China, and are also seeking financial support. Visit the site to learn more.

Heather McRae '01 Heather is interested in mobilizing Tabor volunteers for Habitat for Humanity.  If you would like to get involved, please let her know.

Emily Cook '02 spent two years with AmeriCorps both as corps member and staff.. "I participated in City Year Boston and then joined the staff and moved to Arkansas where I helped launch City Year Little Rock. I would love to talk to anyone interested in taking time off between Tabor and college."

Jaquelyn M. Scharnick '02 is an officer and director of Saving Second Base, a, NYC-based non-profit organization of young professionals committed to raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliated organizations.   Our hope is that by spreading awareness about breast cancer at a young age, women and men will know where to go for support and resources if ever faced with a breast cancer diagnosis and that our efforts will expedite the eventual discovery of a cure for the disease.  The organization hosts events in a number of cities, including New York, Boston, Washington, DC, Chicago, and Los Angeles.  To learn more about Saving Second Base, contact Jackie at jscharnick@post.harvard.edu or visit www.savingsecondbase.org.

Raquel Colon '03 went to Kampala, Uganda, as a volunteer for Safe Alternatives For Youth (SAFY). SAFY is a nonprofit organization that has created sustainable educational and recreational programs for the youth of Kitamanyangamba slum in Kampala. SAFY’s goals are to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and reproductive heath, and to prevent child trafficking by encouraging social responsibility and economic independence. Raquel introduced mural art into a recreational program to involve the students in community communication. "I strongly believe that art created by the youth will become a symbol of hope and inspiration for the entire community, and as a means for them to express abstract ideas and emotions. (For more information about Kitamanyangamba, its youth, and SAFY you can visit www.safyuganda.org.)"
