Senior Project Program
"To get what I wanted, I gave all I had."
Kulika Chomvong, Class of '07, Heitmann Award Winner for Best Senior Project
Each spring, approximately 30-40 seniors are approved to work on an individually designed senior project, with each participant forgoing "traditional" class time so that he / she can devote energy to initiating, developing and completing a project of personal interest. Projects vary in scope and design, but each entails a great deal of preparation and research. The process is part of the project and many seniors learn quickly that there are just as many frustrations as there are rewards to such an undertaking. A representative sampling of projects undertaken In recent years includes:
- Internships at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
- Internship as a teaching aid in a classroom of autistic children
- Construction of a crew shell
- Restoration of a wooden dinghy
- Creation of a CD of original composed and performed music
- Creation of various painting, ceramic and photography portfolios
- Composition of original short stories
- Learning to tune a car engine (with instruction by the Tabor mechanics on the maintenance staff)
- Research of family genealogy
At the end of the six week project period (from roughly the beginning of April until the end of May), participants present their work to the Tabor Community and the Senior Project Committee for review and evaluation. For those who choose to participate, the senior project experience is often one of the most significant undertakings and accomplishments of their Tabor career.
